Affiliate programs are a way to make money online. While there are dozens of different ways to profit on the internet, the most popular and perhaps lucrative opportunity out there is to become a part of an affiliate program.

What is an affiliate program?
Affiliate programs, or associate programs as they are sometimes called, are programs that help bring online traffic to certain merchant’s websites. This is done by offering another website or blog a percentage of the sales from traffic that is directed to the online merchant. The website that hosts the banners or links is known as the affiliate, while the site where the goods or services can be purchased are offered is known as the merchant website.

What types of affiliate programs are there?
There are over a dozen different types of affiliate programs out there to join. Each program comes with a different agreement between the merchant and the website or blog owner on how payment is determined. The agreement will contain how the traffic will be directed to the merchant website, such as through links or clicking on banners, and how much the affiliate website will get for a commission. In addition, it will specify what the commission is based off of, such as sending a person to a website or by someone making a purchase.

Pay per click is one of the most popular types of affiliate programs on the internet. This program involves the affiliate site placing links that lead back to the merchant website. Most pay per click agreements will pay the affiliate website or blog owner for every visitor who comes to the merchant site instead of paying based off of a percentage of sales.

Another popular affiliate program is that of the pay per sale agreement. Just like the pay per click agreement, affiliate marketers will place links on their websites or blogs that lead back to a merchant website. However, instead of paying for every customer who clicks on the link, this type of agreement will only pay a percentage of the sales that any referred customer makes on the merchant website.

There are also pay per lead programs, residual programs and two-tier programs. Essentially any program that pays other websites or blogs for generating traffic to their website or encourages others to make purchases can be considered an affiliate program.
How to select products in affiliate programs.

Affiliate programs are popular because they are relatively simple to get started in. All that is required is the ability to create a website or blog in which the affiliate links or banners can be placed and then enter into an agreement with a merchant site through an affiliate program.

There are countless affiliate products out there and not all of them will be suited for any particular site. By using an affiliate network, it is possible to find the ones that closely match what is best for any one website or specified pages in that site.

For example, you would not want to work with an affiliate marketing program that sells health and beauty products exclusively if your website or blog focused on computers and technology. This type of affiliate agreement would not be beneficial to either the affiliate website or merchant website because the type of people that would visit the website or blog would most likely not have any interest in purchasing health and beauty products. Therefore, you would want to search through the affiliate program network to find a program that offered the opportunity to team up with a merchant site that sold technology or computer based items, which would increase your chances of generating a profit.

Choosing an affiliate program from one of the affiliate networks also provides a level of security and protection to both the affiliate website and the merchant website. Programs chosen through the network will serve as a go-between for the affiliate and merchant sites. It will track clicks, purchases and payments so neither side holds 100% of the responsibility for handling the payment or determining how much traffic was generated from the links or referrals.
